Meet the "Old Farts"

Meet the “Old Farts”

For years we “piddled around” in our garage workshop in Cincinnati, Ohio, often rehabbing one house or another. Reusing and repurposing furniture and materials was always something we considered necessary and important to do. We could be found shopping the Habitat For Humanity “ReStores” or Easter Seals “Building Value”.

As our Grandchildren grew, our focus shifted to furniture and toys they would enjoy. We were delighted with the pleasure our handicrafts brought them.

Friends who saw the items we had made began asking if they could order one for their kids. We started to consider a business enterprise in Cincinnati when a job transfer brought us to beautiful Charleston, SC.   Once we got established here we decided to take a chance and elevate our “piddling” to a new level.

Thus TJ Handiworks was born!

We design, produce, and customize hand painted children’s Adirondack chairs, rockers and 2 seater “Invite a Friend” chairs with a table joining them.

Each item is handcrafted with top quality lumber purchased from our local millworks, and chosen with weather resistance, insect resistance and years of durability in mind.

Along with quality lumber we glue, and then fasten the parts with coated stainless wood screws rated for outdoor use; and our rockers are fastened with steel carriage or lag bolts, for strength and support.
After painting and customizing the furniture, we seal it with multiple coats of non-yellowing, water based polyurethane for added durability.

Along with our line of Adirondack chairs we build custom step stools and doll-sized rocking chairs for toys or for potted plants.

In our sewing department we offer handmade, custom chair pads for our Adirondacks, Adorable Quiet Books, Soft and Absorbent Burp Cloths and more.

  1. The cornhole sets I ordered for my daughter, son-in-law and grandson were exactly what I wanted. They turned out beautifully and the “kids” loved them. Terry and Jay were great to work with and I would highly recommend. Thanks again. B.G.
